Plasma has higher contrast ratios (so blacks are actually blacks) and personally they seem to offer the best pictures going.
Problems with plasmas is that there stupidly heavy, run pretty warm, use a fair amount of power and are costly for a decent screen (Pioneer etc).
But Lcds are getting there and they have already started manufacturing Lcds that offer similar contrast ratios and picture

Plasmas won't be being manufactured for much longer.
Most people have either or will be soon phasing them out.

We're considering a bigger screen, is it still the case that 46" and above is purely plasma territory?
Just dont want to buy an obselete technology.
Sorry for hijack but i guess the answer is relevant to the question.

are you sure thats one of the main advantages they have over LCDs!
john: 40" bigger on LCD is a joke unless youre running them on HD constantly! we even had the sony rep down to our store, explaining that sony are concentrating on HD... and arent bothered about the SD market anymore, and it shows!
check all the mags, whos the best? pioneer and panasonic... and what do they make? ONLY plasmas (well 37"+)
