want to pop out and get one at dinner time but dont want to pay microsoft £59.99 for one.

Good question but i cant see it working TBH as your xbox wont have driver support for that device.

you can buy a wireless ethenet bridge that will work and is a lot cheaper ...

and no 3rd party usb devices well wireless ones will not work.
