You have an electricity meter and instead of paying a monthly/quarterly/annual bill, you buy a top up card and stick it in a slot in the meter, like PAYG electricity

My brother had one in his first house, it was cool

I remember the coin meter when i was about 12 in my old house

had a token meter to,its great when you buy a token just before the shops closes and the token doesnt work in darkness till morning

Glad my old man pays direct debit thesse days
