why do so many people (mainly 18-24yr olds) buy car with 0-60 or pub talk BHP figures as the deciding factor?

Because they don't know any better. Alor of young drivers don't actually know how to drive or know what fast is and may have stepped up to something decent when insurance has dropped?!
Why do you care?

Why is is then that when some people buy cars, rave thatthey are all better than the previous, and then settle on one with a quick in gear 30-50 time?

0-60mph for Fast Car brigade (lets give it to Max Power, they are really trying to change their image, and it seem FC (from the covers) is the new super ned boyracer mag).
0-100 is for real performance indicator. However, because of the "rules" of the country, we can't use this time. But its a better reflection.
That or 100-150mph when we get to the big boys toys

i look at 0-60 times because i like booting my car of the lights and these are usaly the speeds achieved when doing this. I dont care about top speed because i rarely drive fast on the motorway. IMO it should only be classed as a hot hatch if it has a decent 0-60 time. If i wanted mid range motorway power i would of brought a saab hence i do use the 0-60 time as a considering factor when buying a car

Agreed with vxr though 0-100 is a far better performance indicator.

i would have thought that for 99% of younger drivers cost or insurance are the deciding factors

I would prefer not to talk about cars with people who have rigid views about why there car is better or superior because of these benchmarks...blah blah, who gives a fuck, don;t show off, just know

and because the speed limit is 70mph, so you know 0-60 is a good indicator of everyday driving/town driving.
Dont see the problem.
plus not every one is completly clued up about cars, when i look for a new car i tend to look for a nice 0-60 time, i just want something nippy off the lights and round town.
Not that i race or follow the cruising scene ect just like a nippy car dont care if its fast 60-100 ect as i do not do those speeds much.

id of thought if a car is quick to 60, all youd have to do is drop at gear at 30 to get up to 70 pretty quick

totally depends on the car gearing and torque, my car needs 3 gears to ge tto 60, hence the highish figure on paper, but take 1st out the equation and its a fair bit quicker then the stats would seem
