are you sure its not the gear selecter or the clutch rather then the gearbox coz my clutch is worn on my x14xe and my 4th gear went and all others were stiff, adjusted the clutch and bingo, all good again

Chock the rear wheels
Jack car up and put on highest level on axel stands.
Get an engine hoist, strap it to the engine.
Undo the rear coolant hose to the heater matrix
Undo the linkage to the gearbox
Split the balljoints, and pull the hubs from the driveshafts.
Remove the driveshafts - there is a circlip holding them into the gearbox.
Support the engine with the hoist, and begin to undo the 2 engine mounts and the rear gearbox mount.
Lower the engine roughly 8 inches (there is enough play in the loom to do this), and then support the gearbox.
Undo the gearbox-to-block bolts. Also remove the lower access cover (sump-side) if present.
While gearbox is securely supported, pull away from block.
Refitting is reversal as above.
