This in your halls of residence?

Did your machine have to be registered for the network? Chances are it was registered with an internal ip address so it cant see the outside, it all goes through a proxy.

Check what IP address the machine has.

if you are on a uni connection then a) it is very unlikely you will be able to bypass their security, and b) even IF you manage it, you would get in so much trouble if they found out that its not worth it. If you wanna be able to download stuff in halls, i highly recommend geting a rapidshare premium accout for about £3 a month, with which you can download at full speed (and on a uni connection thats probably gonna be 3mB/s+). All the latest stuff comes out extremely quickly on rapidshare sites too, eg i got to watch top gear in spain 90 minutes after it aired in england
www.rapidshare.com
www.th3zone.com
www.irapid.co.uk

That should get you started
