Have a look at these;
http://exercise.about.com/cs/nutrition/a/protein_2.htm
http://www.bodyandfitness.com/Information/Bodybuilding/protein.htm
there is plenty of info on the net about it but basically You need to work out how much protein you need a day, depending on the type of training etc, remember when you read information on it and it says weight training it may be refering to a proffesional rather than someone leasurely weight training etc.
Basically there is plenty of information out there, keep reading around the subject, making sure you look at where they are sourced from to avoid bias info etc.

protein is what rebuilds your muscles after damage e.g. a workout so you shouldnt really be taking them before workouts. But constant protein intake from food throughout the day is essential if bulking.

Think my mate has one in the morning, mid day and when he gets in. Having said that, he doesn't seem to have a set gym routine!

30-60 minutes pre workout and immediatley post workout would be better.

Shouldn't be consuming protein before a workout? What a load of tosh. You want your body to be in an anabolic state, not catabolic.

Protein drinks are supplements, and should be used as supplements to an already solid diet. IMO the most important times are first thing is the morning, and immediatley after training. With water.

A good meal pre workout would be better than a protein shake imo.

You said you shouldn't consume protein before a workout because protein rebuilds muscles after a workout.

Carbs are more important pre workout, although protein is required too. Whether it comes from whole food or a shake doesn't really matter.

Most people over emphasis protein and forget about carbs, the muscles need to be refueled as well as repaired.

Thats what i mean, it is far more important to ingest carbs pre workout than protein, you should be keeping your protein intake regular all day long so it shouldnt be and issue to have a sudden shake just before you workout.

That's when meal timings come into play.

I wish I was ignorant to it all really, it puts me off going training because I know I'm not eating anywhere near the amounts I should, so I know there aint much point. I worked out my BMR at 1,800 + exercise expendature, today i've eaten beans on toast twice, 2 turkey sandwhiches and a bit of parkin.

I know what you mean. As ive said many times before, the hour in the gym is the easy part, it's the other 23 hours in the day that are hard.
Keeping to a strict diet where you eat every 2-3 hours is ALOT harder than people think.
Today ive eaten:
Meal 1: 2 scoops Pro-Peptide, 5g glutamine, oats, 1 piece fruit, tbs UDO's oil.
Meal 2: 200g chicken, 75g rice, brocoli, 1 piece fruit.
Meal 3: 200g chicken, 75g rice, brocoli, 1 piece fruit.
Meal 4: 2 scoops Pro-Peptide, 1 piece fruit, tbs UDO's oil.
Meal 5: Pro-GF
TRAIN
Meal 6: Pro-Recover
Meal 7: Large steak, 2 jacket spuds, 1 piece fruit.
Meal 8: 200g chicken, 75g rice, brocoli.
Meal 9: 2 scoops Pro-Peptide, 5g glutamine, nuts.
