Set off to see a mate at 4 or so, was heading up the A2, heard a very loud metal grinding noise (even over my music) so thought shit and as I started to pull across 3 lanes to the hard shoulder, the back just dropped and I was fishtailing with sparks flying out the back. Managed to get it over and got out and was greeted with a wheel missing along with the hub
I did actually laugh more than think 'oh shit'. I was more annoyed I couldn't find the wheel as had no idea where it went
Took a few pics to share my experience

Called the Highway Agency, as I had no idea where the wheel was, so could be anywhere, central reservation, otherside of the carriageway etc so it might have been a danger to other motorists.

They spotted the wheel, it had overtaken me ( ) and was resting up right leaning against the central reservation, skill! So they had to stop the traffic to get to it as it was too busy too run across (rush hour). This was very very embarrassing and I could feel everyones eyes on me!

Highway man running to get the wheel

Recovery eventually arrived after 2 hours...

Exhaust scraped as it went onto the truck, you can see 2 white scrape marks. One was the exhaust, and the other the rear beam.

Where's it gone!?

So got it home at 7 or so, had a look and could instantly see it was a wheel bearing that had shot itself to pieces. Luckily, I had a spare hub in my garage, so rushed around to get the bearing and stalk into my current hub (easier than changing it completely), as I had to leave for work at 9:30. Finished by 8:30, had dinner and went to work in my car as if nothing had happened. Talk about a quick turnaround
I'll take some pictures of the bearing and arch damage tomorrow. I'm just glad it's on the road again, cosmetics can wait.

an action shot as the wheel passed you on the motorway would have been a good one to get.
was the bearing not whining before hand?

Don't I know it, I could have easily spun and hit the central reservation or something but luckily it was pretty controllable!
Rich, yeah it was, and I thought the exact same thing, except the hub and bearing were off a different car, so I can only assume the bearing was already on it's way out on the other car.
I didn't get any whining before hand, which is what the RAC guy asked me, cause I said it's weird I didn't get any warning at all.
Going to check the other bearing today

Who supposedly "repaired" your car then? Bit strange as its the same wheel that had already been fixed in the first place.

May be the wheel just fell off, and the hub was destroyed in the process?

Flips boyfriend, but it wasn't his fault the bearing was faulty, it must have just been like that from the previous car at the breakers.
Butler, yep Gravesend way mate!
Deano, once I get the pics up of the bearing you'll see it's definetly the bearing. The wheel came off with the hub cover still on, and all the wheel nuts on tight, along with the centercap!

I come down there every single day. Thats going London bound yeah?
What time did it happen?
BTW, yes, i f-ing hate it when those wannabe patrollers stop an entire motorway in rush hour, and spend about 10 minutes recovering an item.
They usually park 1/2 mile away, tehn walk to the bloody thing. Meanwhile thousands and thousands of cars are quickly queing. And theres still 3 lanes that can be used.
Saftey first guys......

This almost happened to me in the old corsa. The wheel bearing melted itself to the stub axle
