are they the same thing?
I thought the cross member was the metal part that the headlights usually bolt onto and the slam pannel is the big metal bar behind the front bumper. Am i right?

nope slam panel is where the headlights are cross member is the large metal bit that the rad sits on and then it bolts to the slam panel

Slam panel is the top part with the VIN plate etc
Bar behind the bumper is the crash bar.
Bottom part of the chassis is the cross-member:
