Well had to do some gay photo that describes yourself for some reason at uni. Me and Andy went out armed with a D200, SB-800 and one home made soft box.

It was cold out today. Ace.

Basically a box to put over a flash/light with a diffuser. Instead of a harsh flash light it "softens" it. They use them all the time in modeling shots. We made our own out of wire and a piece of plastic

Very cool photo Jonny, i like the colour in these types of photos is this due to using extra flash's &/or a soft box. i find that when im out taking UE photo's the colours always seem to be too overpowering? to bright ? if that makes sense?

any tips for a newbie

Then greeny tint? Just playing about editing it in RAW then Photoshop. If your overexposing your shots the use a faster shutter speed or higher aperture. I also wouldn't use my on camera flash doing UE, tripod and long exposure or set up an off camera flash for some added lighting

ah yeah, ive never really got the hang of RAW files tbh lol

yeah i mean the photos come out fairly good quality and the exposure is ok imo but for example http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=1082111519&size=o

the colour is quite in yer face which works imo on that photo but for a derelict building i'd want more of a subtle colour like the green tint you have on your portrait.
difficult to explain

is it just a case of a slight edit in PS?

RAW is no harder than jpeg infact its a hell of alot easier as u have full control over white balance, exposure, hues etc and can make much more subtle changes as all the data is retained from the photo.

Just shoot in RAW danny and learn it, its not hard at all, helps loads.

Yeah i mean with that pic above ive worked on it a bit in photoshop, i kinda have an advantage being a graphic designer means i know it very well

I've always found using a HUGE softbox so much more rewarding than the small ones - I have a 30cm X 30cm one and compared to an Octobox I used that was about 1.3m X 1.3m it was barely even worth using the 30cm X 30cm one after that because the results were so good on the Octo.

I've been using bounced flash quite a bit lately as well, indoors anyway.

Softboxes are my favourite way of shooting portraits even though a few pro photogs I know have switched to using hard direct light instead.

Yeah Bouncing the flash can be quite useful.

Get a photo, i'm intrigued

I need a new flash head if i'm gonna use a big Octobox again, my flash heads are just too small - I'm looking at these:

Right, can't get a shot as its at my mates but just imagine something that resembles a lamp shade with a frame made from wire, thick semi transparent plastic sheet to diffuse and soften the light and a black bin liner to cover it all.

Sounds shit. yes. Does it work. Hell yeah

Yeah I like the ring flashes too - thing is, I couldnt warrant buying one at the minute because you can overuse one - like you can the fisheye I have, thats why it comes out maybe a couple of times a shoot. If someone were looking to give themselves a style, then using it frequently would give them what they were looking for - and another thing with the ring flash is the flash tubes are expensive to change, they dont have modelling lights and the effect is disturbed by any amount of ambient light too.

Wicked bits of kit though - i'll have one 1 day i'm sure.

Deffo Ben. I agree about overuse too, fisheye was a good example to use. It can get "gimmicky"

Yep, i held the flash in the passenger seat and camera on the dash

10.5 Nikon one Ben, same as yours. The photo is cropped quite a bit so don't see the bend as much

How'd you trigger the flash, have you got a hotshoe lead?

Those lenses rock - have you seen the filter holder at the body side of the lense? You have to use special gel filters and cut them to size and put em in - good idea though.

Yeah normal filters wont go over the curved lens. SB-800 uses infra red to pick up the signal

Ah, so you got a trigger - what body were you using? I know the D1, D2 and D3 have built in triggers.
