well im selling my glanza due to ins and running costs, (looking in cars for sale!) anyway im thinking of one of these. i only have £500 to spend and i need to be able to ins it! im looking at the 1.7 340 one currently being offered at £380 to me with 56k on the clock limtied eddition blue line. i want a shit car to have fun in, but not care if someone crashes into it etc etc. yes i could choose a corsa/nova, but im going to want to keep this a while! plus the volvo is rwd so il be getting my fun there.
any advise or info on these cars? and are they reliable? iv never seen a volvo on the side of the road broken down, and they are mainly owned by old people so engines hopefully wont be so worn! maybe only the clutch!

the 1.7 engines are bulletproof.

although the 480 is a cooler looking car. they're also very cheap.

Cheap

body panels are difficult to get, the 1.4 and 1.7 are renault designs, and you can fit the renault 16v using the volvo sump if you really want

f1moto near me do lowering kits for them, and fibreglass panels

most engine bits can be got from euro car parts

have a look on volvo 300mania forum, they have all the info youll need.

youll find it hard to get a road worthy one for £500 and the 3 door ones are the more sort after.
the clio 16v transplant isnt as easy as just changing the sump so dont be fooled.
you have to use a mixture of clucth and fly wheel parts, the wiring is a night mare and you have to loose your heating.

theres a shop on ebay that do a few bits for them but all youll need to start having some fun is some 2" lowering spring and blocks for the rear and get the diff welded up.
also have a look on the driftworks forum they have allot of info and a few 340's for sale on there

yea the only way to keep your heating is to relocate the throttle body on the opposite end of the intake manifold and get the other end welded up. but for someone that just wants a bit of cheap fun this turns into an expensive conversion.

if you set aside £1500 you could have something like this probably the ultimate 340 at the minute
