John Collins has resigned as Hibernian manager with immediate effect, BBC Scotland understands.
The Easter Road boss, who took over in October 2006, told the players of his decision at training on Thursday.
Collins, 39, guided Hibernian to a CIS Insurance Cup success in March, with a 5-1 victory over Kilmarnock.
He has recently been linked to the vacancy with the Scotland national team and leaves Hibernian with the club now fifth in the Scottish Premier League.
Collins, capped 58 times for Scotland, won the club's first major trophy last season just five-and-a-half months into his first management job.
The move will now spark speculation that the former Celtic, Fulham, Monaco and Everton midfielder is set to take over as Scotland boss, following the departure of Alex McLeish.
Collins took over at the Edinburgh club - replacing first-team coach Mark Proctor who was in temporary charge - after Tony Mowbray's departure for West Bromwich Albion.
Hibernian finished sixth in the Scottish Premier League in 2006/07.

Got to be for the Scotland job, really not happy about that if he gets it though, hasnt done near enough to merit it

I think he would make a good scotland manager tbh. Would rather him than Mark McGhee. He did well in the cups with hibs last season but their league position wasn't great for a team of their calibre.

He also said he could have challenged the Old Firm with a bit of backing from the board.
I wish he'd get his head out his backside, he did ok but all the groundwork at Hibs was put in by Bobby Williamson, John Park, Tony Mowbray etc etc etc
