Right my car has been making a 'tapping' noise sine just before xmas & have been told its the top end (camshaft/followers)

it was due to be sorted by now but have been messed around by a couple of places & now i want to fix this problem as its driving my nuts.
What i want to know is:

- If i take the Cam cover off will i be able to see the problem?
- How do i go about taking the cover off, and putting back on?Will this affect anything?
- Is there any special tools, setting up needed when replacing cams/lifters/tappets?

bearing in mind i have never done any work on an engine before
