I've rebuilt a c20xe to put in my corsa so will need the exhaust joined to the manifold when fitted. The first time I start it up I plan to do 20-30 easy miles then change the oil. The problem is I don't want to start the engine for the first time only to drive to the exhaust place which is only 2 mile away then switch it off and also I don't want to try and start it for the first time at the exhaust place. So is there any laws stopping me driving with just the manifold.

The exahust must not exit underneath the car, or be unsilenced, so you'd get pulled over and fined, possibly have the car impounded for being un-roadworthy.
Get the exhaust done, then do your 30 miles.

Cheers, just wondered if there were any laws against it.

The noise is not the major issue but may be a rectification notice. I'm think though that the gas must exit at one single point at the car, not drift out from underneath, so you must have a pipe at the extremity, either side or rear.
I'm assuming that you can't trailer the car to the exhaust place?

I had to drive 35 miles with nothing but a manifold when my CAT snapped on my corsa, wasn't the nicest drive but not much else I could do

if its only a few miles it wont cost much to get it trailored. the exhaust place may even have the facility to collect the car if you ask them.
If its a fully rebuilt engine than I wouldnt advise starting it without an exhaust anyway as any problems that there may be wont be apparent without being able to see the exhuat fumes to check for colour and the noise will drown out any tell tale signs of engine problems.

The flames won't suffocate you.

The manifold doesn't exit near the rad on a non turbo car, it comes out near the gear lever.

Man has a point. I had tapping problems on my bike once rebuilt, didn't hear them for a while as I was running it with no exhaust as I didn't have it at that time (fucking loud to say the least). Fortunately the problem didn't get worse and I fixed it once I realised it was there (after the silencer was re-attached).

It's a C20XE Mike, the downpipe and manifold will be one piece.

when my xe went in the old gsi i drove it to work and back for a week. Not far each way, but there's a school in between.
One morning a woman with a kid virtually jumped off the pavement into a fence and had her hands over the kids ears.
It wasn't THAT loud from inside the car.
