Some are a bit rubbish admittedly, but I like the shadows cast by the trees in a lot of them. Thought it might make a nice effect to have a natural lens flare in a couple too but now I see full size they don't look so good. Something to leave to photoshop I think.....

I think they all look good, the last two look a little light though but as you said it can be adjusted  Did you use any kind of lense filter?

Nope
Nikon S5700 with auto-focus. All I did was turn it on and disable the flash

was looking at some polariser filters. saw some pic taken with/without and the difference is very noticable. Next camera purchase i think

You picked a tough old scene to photograph. Shots like this take so much time to plan - time of day is always a key factor because of the quality of light. Trouble with the kind of shots your attempting here is that the eye has nothing to fix on and is left wandering around the scene for a focal point. Leading lines are also an important aspect as is the rule of thirds (even though there are no rules in photography which is half the fun). Sometimes flare can work, others it fails, you have to be careful when you choose to include it.
You are better off isolating parts of the scene, or cutting down to abstract to make a success of the photos. I've tried and failed many times trying to make an uninteresting scene look interesting and it doesnt work.
Remember if you do buy a Circ. Polarizer - it works best when you shoot at 90 degrees to the sun.

exactly my thoughts when i saw the photos, 4 +7 do show it better with the path leading away from the camera but they do seem "empty" which i know is an irnoci statement given its a woodland...

Know what you mean, I didn't really spend any time, just went for a wander, camera in hand and shot away, no tripod, nothing - as I say, some are good, some are not so good and I'd just delete them.
You live and learn I suppose, just stuck up all the ones I'd taken to see if anyone liked any of them

Dont get me wrong, i'm not saying they are bad, some pro photogs wouldnt have been able to make anything more interesting from the same framed shot.

Might be a bit big, and I've cut the filesize right down, hope they don't look too bad....

Bit of burning and editing on the 2nd one could turn out great. When you have areas of dark shadow though, make sure you take into an account with your exposure else you'll lose all the detail in the shadows.
