erm, if youve got a mate or someone who knows what theyre doing with you would be better, if you dont get some bits right though the valves will hit the piston and then you may as well piss an xe down the drain

Well if you have the work space and can afford the car to be off the road for a while it would be a good learning exercise to attempt it. Would love to do more stuff myself on mine but I need it for work and i dont have a driveway or anything to work on

IMO Lee's quote is going to be better than any company and hes worksmanship is probably better the amount he's done. Theres only one place i'd go and trust 100%...

Agreed.

Lee's price for doing my xe was extremely good, if you cant afford it with lee's quote then you shouldnt be doing it at all imo.

XE is one of the easiest engines there is to rebuild as far as the practical side of things. A good engineering company will do the work on the block and crank and will supply all parts needed and probably offer a lot of hlp and advice.

I rebult my xe bottom end myself with no help and I had no experience at all. Only thing that I had done for me was the cylinders honed and the crank polished. The head was done for me too as I had it ported & gas flowed with bigger valves and mostly kent parts. Although I havn't started it yet so don't know if it will be ok or not.

Not being funny but a lot of the rebuilt ones seem to go wrong

Buy a well running one, bang it in. If it brakes put another lump in. Cheaper too

Thats because no one knows whats what until you take it down to its component parts. You may be able to get away with a hone, but if it needs a rebore and oversize pistons the difference in cost is already about £400 or so. Then there are other things which may or may not need machining or additional work, it is a minefield and without taking it apart you really do not know what is needed if you are looking for something taht will last.

Everyone has to start somewhere, no one is born knowing how o rebuild an engine and everyone had to do their first one day.
