I need to upgrade my PC but not really sure what type of thing I should be going for. My current spec is:
Asus K8N-VM
AMD Sempron 3100+ 1.81 Ghz
Nvidia GeForce 6100 256mb
Samsung ST0842N 80gb Harddrive
1gb (2x 512mb) DDR2 Ram

The first thing I need to get is a new hard drive (minimum 500gb) but should I be going for internal or external as there pretty much the same price and if internal then IDE or SATA?
I'm also thinking about moving to Vista so will be looking to upgrade the ram. I've found 2x 1gb Kingston DDR2 for about £30 but will I then need to upgrade the motherboard/processor?

Thanks for any help and advice you can give

500gb HDD --> Internal --> Sata
2gb RAM
Intel CPU (as fast as you can afford) Dual Core
Graphics card should be ok, unless you want to upgrade it
Change board to suit CPU / RAM / Grahics etc

btw, is it worth getting the Q6600 or stump up extra for the new wolfdale (that them?) dual cores?

Play a few games, general browsing/email/downloading, but mainly do audio/visual work.

Been having a look and for what I currently use the PC for (media storage, megadrive emulator and my wife plays the sims. Its not even used for internet ATM) I think I'm just gonna get this and two of these.
Can't really afford to spend too much at the moment and from reading up my graphics card is built into the motherboard so don't want to replce them yet.

you waont really notice that much difference between 65nm and 45nm cores unless you o/c. the 45's need less juice and run cooler, but most q6600's will reach 4ghz per core.. which should be enough...

Thats the thing, im trying to build a new system that runs cooler and is quieter. Im not a hardcore gamer (mostly video editing and music production) and my current system (Athlon XP ) has lasted me 4 years or so, so i want the new build to last. But it seems to be that if you want the system to last a while then go with the Quad cores, if you want a quiet and cooler running system then head down the 45nm route.
Confused as buggery
