I have been told it lets the engine more freely and you dont actually need a cat in a diesel cat for it to pass an mot?? can anyone shed any light on this

my van. 1.7d 2000 reg, on a b chasis, never had a cat. i always thought it shud have. and looking at diagrams it shud have had.
i put a bottle of redex that treats 4 tanks, in one full tank,. once a month, and always made sure it was fully serviced.
it passed its mot 0.01 which i think is the lowest emission you can get
plus cos it was fully serviced, it never smoked.

the diesel emissions is tested on the soot coming from the exhaust and how dense it is so i can really see how removing a cat would make it go up unless its a particle filter which would filter out the soot and so lower the emissions

Injector cleaner in the fuel system, clean out the air filter and before the MOT take if for a run to get the engine as hot as possible. should see you through the MOT

It will fail if they look under the car and no CAT is present.
You could maybe have a box made up to go in its place to look like it had a cat or gut out the exisiting cat and refit?

why would it? if it passed on emissions then surely they cant fail you just for not having one

Look I am not making this us I was told this my an MOT tester 5 minutes after he had spoken to the ministry about the issue
Not to mention if this was the case why is there a market for sport cats? Think about it?

I do belive its down to legislation that all cars post 93 are required to have a CAT present regardless.

That is correct.
Also, if you remove the DPF which is part of the cat then you will be followed by a massive cloud of black smoke.

all cars after 31/07/1995 must meet emission limits:
<0.30 co
<200 ppm hc
0.97-1.03 lambda (0.95-1.09 for rover and ford)
if a cat is not fitted and it meets these limits then it will pass the mot.
99.9% of cars will NOT do this therefore must have a cat fitted.
a cat not fitted in itself is not a fail

But isn't there something about police roadside checks and not having a cat?

Local MOT tester said otherwise that it has to be present regardless. A few years ago on a cruise to brighton one of the lads off here got stopped and had a roadside inspection where he got done for having no CAT

some testers will say that as they know that it wont pass emissions without one but it doesnt need one for the test but it has to pass emissions.
the police proabably will try and prosecute for it as they dont no any better especially if your on a cruise as they try to prove a point.
also passing the mot doesnt make the car legal to drive on the road.
