Think I've found myself a runabout, 99 plate 1.6 Sport for a good price. Going to have a look at it this week but the price suggests that there should be something wrong with it. (there is a bit of cosmetic damage but thats not an issue to me). Obviously I'll be asking why its priced so low, but is there anything I should look out for specificly?

Could also do with a bit of feedback on what they are like reliability wise? Any sensors that keep breaking? Or common MOT failures etc

Just general info really

Yours was a converted one though wasn't it? Could that have been anything to do with it?

headgaskets can be a problem but not as much as the 1.4 16v, idle control vavles can be a issue.

Head gaskets go on lots of cars, never heard of them being common on the 1.6 engines?

ICV is a common one on a few of the vaux engines from the corsa, at least its a cheap & easy problem to fix

Any others?

Not easy on the x16xe

Head gaskets are fine one these. Main issues i see with them at work is idle problems, noisey cam followers and oil burning issues. Also seen a few with cutting out issues, normally speed sensor related.

Water pumps mine went about 67k so should change them when doing cambelt kit (cambelt kits must be changed as seen a lot with snapped cambelts when i used to work for vauxhall, also EGR valves mine has been fucked since i bought it 2 years ago but runs great so not bothered, these are almost £200 from vauxhall and are a bastard to get to so a lot of labour, mine burns a bit of oil but no loads top it up every 2-3 weeks doing 250 miles a week, smokes on start up occasionaly but not really a problem apart from that they're wicked, strong engines and gearboxes, they all rattle slightly on start up not sure why tbh just an ecotec thing

Cosmetic: Rust, Bonnet, Boot - Usual.

If it's an AC model, make sure it's all working ok.

Stand at the back of the car to make sure it's not smokey when it fires up. The 1.6's can get a bit smokey if they've had a hard time.

My Sport was an S plate one in Arden Blue, had 106k when I got it. Nice car. Pulled well through the gears etc. Still was a really nice engine considering it's mileage.

Only problem I had with mine were that the handrake had siezed and needed freeing off. Other than that, spot on engines. Pulls well and runs sweet as a nut.

What do mean by idle problems? Just sticking idle motors etc?

I have a x16xe in my nova, and so far its been 100% reliable. Its never let me down once, including pod 1/4's, rr days etc etc, best engine ive owned.
And its been fitted about 8/9 months now

So very reliable in my experience, just watch out for oil burners.
