. . .so, I've been doing motorway driving lately which I used to think was less economical in the 12v than country driving, because of the high revs (3.5krpm @ 70mph). But I'm wrong. Sometimes sitting at 60mph because the traffic is busy so going any faster is just pointless - sometimes quicker if I'm late so we're talking mixed driving. I also went on a midday country blast yesterday on this tank. The motorway driving I've been doing is approx. 20 miles one way.

I just filled up which cost me £36.00 (32.76 litres @ 109.9p ). I had just under quarter of a tank to go. I always reset the mile counter when I fill up and I had done 344 miles to 32.76 litres.

So:
32.76 litres x 0.22 = 7.2072 gallons

344 miles / 7.2027 gallons = 47.73 mpg

Bargain, considering diesel costs more 116.9p/litre where I filled up. And being faster, you drive it harder, so get similar mpg = out of pocket.

I'm happy

My best tank in my 1.2 16v was 430 miles, at least 100 miles of that was done between 90-100. The faster you go the better the consumption High revs ftw

Ive had 40 mpg in mine, on the way home from Silverstone last June, with about 4 days worth of clothes, sleeping bag and car bits in it, and a set of 5 cesaros with tyres

Thats in a 1.6 Sport too, doing about 80 most the way home.

Naaa, it's just continous changing gear and changing revs that kills MPG.

Lets face it, 70mph is fast enough

Sort of

The point I'm getting at is I was baffling on about getting a derv, better MPG etc, save money etc. Essentially, I wouldn't.

I've experienced quite a few dervs in the past and after driving all of those I wouldn't want to own one, even tho I do but I've never seen a petrol sprinter

From my experience, non turbo dervs are useless, my dad's had 2 that I've drove, and I've now got a Sprinter 2.3 all where slow, noisy and useless on diesel.

The turbo'd diesels I've drove, I've never actually drove on the road but all just felt like vans driving em on site where I used to work.

The smoothest and least van like diesel I've been in is a 57 reg, renault lowloader luton van

You'd have to do well to win me over to diesel, I've never liked it, and can't see me starting liking it anytime soon.

Petrol ftw

See what you're meaning Deano, but for the same MPG, the diesel will still be quicker and if I had to choose, I'd be picking any nippy diesel over my old 12v any day.

I agree - the 12v at junctions is fucking annoying. And pulling onto dual carriageways from small slip roads is pure dangerous BUT, once at 70 - 80mph, you're at 70 - 80mph, we're all going the same speeds.

I'm just quite shocked I'm getting 47mpg from the 12v - always thought it would be bad because of high revs all the time.

Be interesting to see what a small engines diesel, 1.3CDTi Corsa would have done during the same 344 miles.

I tried the 1.3 diesel before settling on my 1.2 petrol C - the petrol felt quite a bit nippier and with a better rev range, I just preferred it - no idea what sort of MPG it'd manage over the course of a tank though.

FYI, the optimum speed you 'should' maintain is 55mph. What kills MPG is slowing and accelerating I've found - I did 55mph from Flitwick all the way to Ipswich (was a work trip and I had all day ) and managed between 50 and 55mpg.

Gunned it back home though and averaged 40

How can there possibly be one optimum speed to drive at when engines are different and geared differently.

The optimum in your car might not be the optimum in another.

Generally it varies from car to car but should be stated in the handbook.

I said 55mph as that it what it says in the 12v handbook and my 1.2 as well.
