For anyone who can help.

Basically I have been told my rear calipers either need adjusting or I need new ones on my astra, when I drive the car and go over bumps there is a clonking noise coming from the brakes. Does anyone know what this is caused by, I have just had my rear springs replaced as they had snapped but I just want to know if driving the car makin this dodgey noise will cause more damage? and if it deffinately is the calipers from what I have said?

Anyone?

i get this in my corsa gsi so would like to know aswell, all i can think it is, is the hand break cable that runs along the rear beam is slack and bangs/clonks when going over a bump...

Is it definatley comign from the brakes Kel?

Could be a worn bush somewhere. I can't see how the calipers would make a clonking noise.

unlikely to be the caliper if it clonks over a bump as its an unsprung component , as is the rest of the brake assembly.

check suspension struts and bushes first, especially if you have had a snapped spring as these would have taken a beating.

The lad who looked at it over the weekend said the calipers are close to seizing? and that he can do something with the pistons its all confusing for me, I dont even know if an makin sense here haha. All i know is he turned the rear discs with the handbrake off and they was sticking and very tough to turn, he said usually it takes nothing to turn them. What you think>?

sounds like it could do with new discs and pads and the rear calipers cleaning up and re-greasing, if they ahve siezed they will need a bit of attention.

cant see them banging over bumps though.

ditto

siezed calipers will still be bolted onto the carriers just as tight. What exactly can be banging? I'd suggest it was suspension related tbh

I've just had this problem, banging over bumps found out the top spring mount had corroded with rust and the spring had moved in a way so that it was hitting the body when going over bumps!
solved buy welding in a new top spring mount.

if you've had new springs fitted they should have spotted it though...so may not be that!

its more rattly than bang to be fair its deffinately brake related cos when you touch the brakes with pedal you can feel n hear it, its weird quite hard to explain unless ur drivin the car or lookin at it whilst its bein driven slowly.

Caliper may have come loose, that rattles like hell.

Or the pads are rattling in the caliper.
