Ahoy folks, my car is nearly fully repaired now after it's smash a couple of months ago that left it a Catergory C write off.
My insurers sent me a leaflet about a VIC check, which says that I can't get a replacement logbook or v11 until the check is passed. So it doesn't sound like it's urgent though obviously I will get it out the way.
But besides the VIC check is there anything I have to do before I can drive the car on the roads again?

Does a vehicle require a MOT before a VIC can be carried out?
If a vehicle over 4years old is driven to a DVTA Test Centre for the VIC, it must have a current MOT.
 In answer to ur question: no it doesnt need another mot

You'll need a new MOT before the VIC, the one from before the accident won't count. My Laguna had 8 months left on the MOT when it got repaired, but it still needed a new one.

Ah right, damn it! So I'll need an MOT before I can get it painted at the bodyshop then.. having to drive there and all

first you need to mot it before the vic test if you dont re mot it they wont let you take it there unless on a trailer or flatbed
no mot no new logbook

I think it was you helped me when i asked a similar question about my written off corsa. Either way, i rang up and asked and they said i DID NOT need a new MOT, so i went with the old one, pre accident, and all was fine. Maybe i was misinformed by the DVLA but the person on the phone and the tester all had nothing bad to say about my car.

i'm actually going through this now with my corsa.
fully repaired, was a cat c write off.
needed a new MOT regardless of when the one pre-accident was, a VIC check and then need to apply for the log book again via DVLA, which i'm waiting for now.
that's all

Seems that way. I was quite impressed, it meant i was able to get my car back on the road after it was CAT C'd for £3.50

it doesnt need to have a MOT before a VIC but the car will have to be trailered to the VIC place, and will need a MOT before it can be drove on the road

Was on the phone to the insurance company about an hour ago and contrary to what some of you guys said on here they said an MOT isn't required, just a VIC check.
Thing is, is a VIC check actually needed before I can drive it? As the only thing they do is allow you to get a new logbook

Yes. The car isn't allowed on the road until it's had the VIC. You won't be able to tax it without it. VOSA said you'll also need a new MOT as your old one is invalid. I rang VOSA twice to check before I put the Laguna through.

That's odd, surely Liverpool Victoria wouldn't be giving out dodgy information when it's their bread and butter sort of thing to deal with?

we have put 4 cars thru VIC checks, if you want to drive the car to the VIC test it will need a mot and insurance, otherwise it will need to be trailered

Dragging this on a bit more.. I'm quoting this from the VIC leaflet:
'If your car is involved in an accident and subsequently notifified to DVLA as 'written off' by an insurer, but you decide to keep the car to repair yourself, it may still get a VIC marker. You should still have the V5C and you can legally drive the car as long as it is licensed, has a valid MOT, is roadworthy, and you have appropriate insurance cover. However if a VIC marker is set, DVLA will not issue you with a V11 or a new V5C if you should need a replacement'
What do you make of that guys?

Yeah, agreed....
I've got my VIC on next Tuesday. It's getting insured on Thursday, MOT'd on Friday, and I can then drive it to the VIC testing station to a prior arranged appointment... You can't go anywhere else in it.
You don't need Road Tax for it though.
If you can't do any of the above, it needs trailering (including to the bodyshop)
You can't go far wrong if you read the VIC guidance notes on VOSA's website.

I bought it as a cat C needing repair, so needed the VIC to get the log book and tax it. For the sake of £30 and 20 minutes you might as well get it done.

no i totally agree and will get it done, its just that i have my exams next week and would be buggered if i couldn't drive my car to them due to waiting for a vic!
