right basically my battery was dead, used mothers car with some leads to start mine up, turned the ignition and all i heard was what sounded like a gunshot,,, what happened,.... not sure what to do... HELP!!!

Rapid clicking noise is the starter motor engaging and disengaging very quickly as it tries to draw current and can't.

You need to leave the leads on for a short while and also ensure that the connections are sound between the two batteries. Although you may have bright ignition lights when using power from the other battery, those connections can't supply the current required to turn the engine over.

right so what ive done now is put a little battery charger on my battery... will it be safe to start it... what was the big gun shot sound... can that be serious or what?

If it's clicking then there's still not enough charge in your battery.

Phases of battery flatness are -

Starting normally - battery is OK
Trying to start but turning over slowly, ignition lights dimming as it turns - battery is getting flat
Clicking noise - not enough enough power to engage the starter motor so it doesn't get as far as turning the engine at all.
Nothing at all - no lights - battery is completely flat

Gun shot sound if it was rapid clicking almost buzz like is what I described.

Get a few people on board, one to hold the revs on the charged car (your mums) at around 2.5k and the others to ensure the clips are on both batteries properly. If necessary hold the handles out to squeeze the teeth on to the battery terminals.

Then start your car as normal. If it clicks after this then leave it connected for 10 minutes and try again. If it still doesn't work your battery is goosed because it's gone too flat and bent a cell. Flattening a battery to that degree can damage it and you may have done this.

no it wasnt like buzzing it was asif it was backfire from my exhaust. one huge shot sound... almost made my ears blead

stop worrying, if youv done something its already done, you might as wel try turning it over, as long as you have enough charge in the battery, if not leave it on charge abit longer otherwise you may put wear and tear on alternator or starter motor

Aren't you meant to put the ground wire on the discharged car onto a ground i.e. the engine/chassis etc, and not the negative terminal of the battery?

That's what I did when I had to jump mine because it said so i the handbook

John's right too, any damage is done now so start it and see how it goes.

Shouldn't matter - the chassis is earthed anyway. Only reason this would improve things is if your battery terminals were old and frayed you were providing a better earth by not including them.

erm will probably have been a live and an earth touching, hopefully its not done any damage, the electrical energy is converted to sound blah blah blah and wont have earthed through any of the cars wiring looms which is a good.

make sure theyre both connected up properly and as someone ian said 2.5rpm and then try turning it over. positive to postive and earth on the alive car to an engine mount or something on the dead car

Yeah also of course make sure the terminals were connected correctly.

sure it wasnt just unburnt petrol that had gathered in your exhaust and as you tried to start the car the smallest spark had lit the fuel in the exhaust and popped?

imo the engine was turned over to slowly to fire but the injectors are still injecting fuel, therefor over fueling thats where the bang came from, either from the exhaust or back out of the inlet.
im sure the motor will be fine buddy.
