I'll start my GSi up from cold & it has a really loud rattle, then it'll go away after about 20seconds of idleing.
If you rev it once it's gone, it'll come back, then go when the revs die back down. But once it's warmed up fully, you cant hear it at all
The lad I bought it off said it was the exhaust hitting the shell, but I had my full system fitted yesterday, so I inspected the exhaust, and all seems fine
My boss heard it and said it sounds like its coming from the alternator pullie? is this common?
thanks

Pulleys wistle, they don't tend to rattle.
Is it top end (i.e. followers) or bottom end?

Top end. It's coming from outside of the cambelt cover
It's been rebuilt and only covered 5k. It's got the SBD rollers onto, if that makes any difference.

get a screwdriver
put the handle to your ear and the head against the alternator
...listen
You look like a nobber, but it helps find where sounds are comming from

Souns like noisey tappets to me, not a massive amount you can do short of replacing them all im afraid although an oil and filter change might help. My LET does the same but im too lazy to strip it down again, just learned to live with it

would have thought it wasnt belt related if it is affected by engine temperature.
I may a thread about this the other day too and we think it may be the tappets/lifters on mine
thread in question
