symptoms. :
No power
revs between 900 - 1100 revs
had faultcode 12xx (fuel and air)
stinks of sulpher
now ppl have said it to be the cat, first lambda sensor and now a blowing manifold.

i started it up friday night and this is all i heard.. so wasnt happy.
going to try replace the lambda sensors on friday, and then if that doesnt work get a 200cell cat welded in.
if that doesnt work its off to garage

well if it is it gives me an excuse to get a 200cell one..

matt : yea plugs checked, oil checked, ive even covered the exhaust incase it was blowing but couldnt feel the gasses escaping else where..
also have the full exhaust off so the only place it could blow would be the exhaust manifold..
but they are meant to tick before fuckin up.

Its misfiring. sounds like a briggs and stratton engine. Its got to be down on one cylinder. which would explain the strange smell, as the unburnt fuel reacts with the cat.
possibly coil, water down the plug holes e.t.c

sounds like the cat has kind of seperated from the manifold or exhaust where ever it is joined.

do these have a small seperate exhaust duct to the egr? that would explain the noise and fault code.

yes they do but the EGR has been disconnected totally from the system.
the cat is welded in place like here

edit:
and i dont think its misfiring because when i take the complete exhaust off it sounds fine, it doesnt rev up and down just stays at 1000 and is just loud.. and doesnt seem like it missing a cylinder.

yeh i thought it sounded like it was missing on one, and couldn't figure out why that'd make the smell...
but of course my car has no cat, which was why when it ran on 3 it just smelt a bit petrolly... I bet his is igniting the fuel inside the cat

if it was the cat that was fucked then i should beable to take the rear sensor out and then it wouldnt know the emissions after the cat..
also if i knocked the cat through and removed the rear lambda it should run fine..
when i remove the front lambda sensor there is NO change to the way the car runs.
making me think its the front lambda sensor

Reasons for it not to be
EGR - been disconnected for weeks
EGR Cheater - unplugged and tried EGR same result
Water Ingress - happend before and ive changed the plugs and they are fine
Misfire - runs fine with no exhaust on it (revs are stable)
Blowing Exhaust / Manifold - wouldnt cause total loss of power (i had problem reversing up the drive)
Intake sensors - removed both no difference just fault codes
Throttle Body Stuck - Unplugged, engine died
Reasons it could be
Front Lambda - causing it to thow up 1220 (fuel and air)
Cat - would explain the stinky smell of sulpher (gone now)
Both - probably knowing my luck

Sounds like its missing to me, plug or coil pack I reckon?
Dont think its down to the CAT myself, I dont think that would explain the complete lack of power!
Good luck

ok bit of an update guys,
i borrowed both lambda sensors of a guy with a 2.2 vx, and there is no change what so ever in the car when using his, so this must mean they are ok?
so only other things i can see would be CAT and maybe the camshaft sensor..
the P0340 code was thrown up once and i thought it may of been a misreading.. or a stored code, erased everything and it wasnt there, now when i started it up it came straight on P0340, wiped unplugged batt, and again.. P0340 \.. so i have finally managed to remove the camshaft sensor and it looks perfectly fine, but i will have to get a new one tomorrow and try it when i get back from work.
hopefully this could be it..

tried the crankshaft sensor, even tho thats what the code was saying its not that, car is exactly the same.
so my next lead is the ignition module and sparkplugs..
i tested the sparks on all 4 and i only got a good spark from 1 of them.. so i need to source another.
ill try that, then the cat.
