any ideas on how to get stuck on metal valve caps off? tried spanners etc and will be quite hard to cut off. please help

Put a suitably sized socket over the end smack with a hammer, that will loosen them (plus WD40).
The you can compress them with valve spring comprerssors, pull the collets out and undo the compressor to get the valve caps.
I assume it has been stood for a while? Thats the only time I have ever had to do the above!
EDIT: Shit, I think you mean wheel valve caps?
