Had to buy a new car on Monday due to the escort failing the MOT miserably. Got myself 2001 (Y) Astra DTi (X20 DTL??). Only thing is, Ive looked through the handbook but there is a light on the dashboard which isnt covered anywhere??? Its a car with a spanner going through it, comes on on start up and when you touch the accelerator it goes out, just wondered what it was??
Dan
btw - not sure if it should be in Help Zone or General so ive put it in both, im sure someone will inform me

Could be anymore vague?
Do you just mean a service? Googling isnt particularly helpful as some people seem to think its simply a service indicator while others appear to think its the EML?
edit - if i had the car atm i would get a picture, as it is I got no internet at home so no easy way of posting one...

Sounds like a service light to me....either get it serviced or there should be a way of turning it off (I found the way to turn mine off on my Corsa C using a google search)
Does the car have a digital odometer on the clocks, if so, the top line should read "INSP" when you first turn the ignition on if this is the service light

Yea its got the digi bit on the clocks, ill look for insp, i do think ive seen that. Its some trick like turning the ignition while holding the brake pedal down or something like that isnt it? I see it earlier somewhere.
Hopefully it is just a service light, if it was EML surely it would be the lightning bolt thing, as in the manual? Strange though that the book doesnt mention it anywhere

While im on the subject of servicing etc.....I dont have a Haynes book atm, can anyone give a brief mileage guide to what eneds to be done and when? And am i correct in thinking the x20 has a chain instead of a belt, and it doesnt need changing till 100k?

I'd say the EML will be the same as in a Corsa B, if you've ever seen one/can remember.
Sounds like a service light to me, as confirmed by others.

I'm not sure mate, I cant remember how to do mine exactly but it was to do with turning the ignition on and holding the trip reset button in or something along those lines...definately wasnt the brake pedal

Yup thats what i meant, dont know why I said brake pedal
Deano, aye on the Corsa I had I think it was like a power bolt icon. I will figure out that reset thing and give it a go tonight.....It needs a service but will have to wait until I can buy the parts and do it myself or until i can afford to pay someone to do it

Car with spanner is E/M/L. As said, INSP shows when a service is due. one way to check is, key in ignition, hold reset butoon in and turn key to No.2 on ignition. Hold the reset button for 20ish secs. If it service light it will reset.

My Corsa C (which I assume is the same as a MK4 Astra) has a light on the dash (car + spanner) and INSP on the screen for service...EML light is a sqaure with a lightning bolt in it

The engine code is Y20DTH. It is chain driven. It's got 16v but only 8 lobes on the camshaft. Yes, 1 camshaft.
Does it feel slow? How far does the revs go? Will it hit 5k? Don't worry, it doesn't go into the redline.
To turn the INSP light off, press the reset button, turn the ignition on and wait till the INSP light flashes a few times then i will go out. Easy as reading that
Anymore about the car just ask. I'm sure i've been through it. Check out my garage, you'll see my Astra.

its not a service light!!!
its eml.
if goes off when tapped throttle, prob a vac pipe to a solenoid valve split or leaking, check all vac pipes first.
fault code will prob be "critical system malfunction 2" which is oil level, oil pressure or vac pressure.

If there is no power there and goes into limp mode when going up a long hill, could be AFM.

It is a real weak point (as i've found out) on MK4 Astra. I managed to get mine done through warrenty when i got the car. Otherwise it would have cost me (i think, it was 4 years ago) £100.

If your tank is getting low and your engine is playing up, it sound like that there is a lot of "crap" at the bottom of your tank that when becomes empty is beign sucked through to the injectors which are then not squirting correctly. With a fully tank and some of that redX and a bit of right foot clears it out untill the tank becomes low again.
Next time fill up when your tank becomes half empty everytime for a month. See if you still have the same problem.
