I have just become the proud owner of a brand new Corsa SRI 1.7cdti and I'm looking for some advice on how to break the diesel engine in.

My husband (who thinks he knows about cars) says I'm not allowed to take it over 1000 revs for the first 1000 miles. He says if I do this, the engine will become accustomed to thrashing and will drink oil.

However another friend has said that I just need to wait for the oil to warm up and then put the car through her paces.

I've never had a diesel car of my own before and don't want to damage the engine in anyway.

Does anybody have any advice on how I should be driving her in the early days?

You would struggle to drive below 1,000 rpm

Personally I would just let it warm up and then drive however you see fit

Tell me about it! She only sits at 1000rpm at 30mph in 3rd gear!

just drive it as if it had done 20k already. no need to run it in.

Surely the dealership should have given you some sort of indication? Also instruction books tend to tell you to drive at a steady pace (never more than 3/4 pedal travel and not more than 3/4 max speed) in any gear and keep it between 2000 and 3000 revs, check the manual

at not going over 1,000 revs, it probably idles at about 700?

Those SRi Corsa's are very nice - What colour did you get? Had chance to get any pics yet?

well the best bit is, I don't actually own it! I'm leasing it for 3 years for a fairly modest monthly cost and I'll be doing 25k miles a year in it hence the dirty diesel engine. So after 3 years it's not my problem anyway, but the lease only covers general wear and tear and routine maintenance so don't really want to mess the car up.

Red - what other colour is there?

1 pic but come on, I'm a woman, I don't know how to do techie stuff....

The SRI interior only comes in black and red cloth, so I don't even know why Vauxhall bothered to offer the car in any colours other than red or black. Having a blue car with red and black interior will surely look wrong??

Or maybe it's just a woman thing about interior design, contrasts etc

the engine will have already been ''run in'' to an extent in the factory. we rev loads of brand new engines straight after we build them to make sure there are no leakages and internal damage.

so your engine will have definitely been ''thrashed'' way before you had it

as said, just let the the temp get to 90 then do as you wish

The interior on the SRi is truly gash if you ask me, but they do look good.

I wouldn't worry about running it in, just wait at least 20 minutes every time you drive it before giving it the beans - you should do that with every car anyway.

One thing I saw in a Vaux garage, was water/rust/dirt streak marks running down the side skirts, which seemed strange for a new car - keep an eye on them

They are. Just this second been in a work mates 1.6 turbo sri! Really like it...quick too!

And he raggs it straight from the off, redline first 4 gears, its fine

And the diesel will be sound. Just drive how you want to drive!

Erm, 0-60'd it tonight from a standing start, 10.2 seconds..

Anybody reckon it will go any faster?

Vauxhall reckon it can do it in 9.3 seconds...

why would you 0-60 a deisel and it will be the driver slowing it down to 10.2

The only way of not going under 1000 rpm is sitting on your drive immitating that your driving or rolling it down a hill
