Have you installed Vista on that D:\? I don't think your going to be able to do it. Personally I'd back everything up to another drive, format C:\ and D:\ and merge them to a single partition. Reinstall Vista then put your data back. I know that's going to take a lot longer but I wouldn't try it the other way. It might lead to data corruption if you can do it at all.

If has no OS on it may be different but I've has a quick look and can't see a definitive answer. Partition Magic is usually the shit for these tasks

can you merge it now it's unallocated?
Try formatting the unallocated partition (if you have everything off it) into a fresh NFTS partiton. Then try and merge it with the C:\

It still has the name and I noticed it's set as a logical drive. Format it so it's unallocated NTFS and change it to a primary drive. Then merge them.

I think it shows up as unallocated automatically once it's formatted. It's been while since I used Partition Magic.
I'm sure there is an option to change it from a logical to primary drive as well. This may then allow you to merge the two partitions as they are the same type. I hope you have everything backed up as I wouldn't want you to lose anything. I tend to reformat everything and start again but if you don't have a spare drive then that is not really an option. Someone else may have a better idea.

I give up . I'll have a little trawl of the net later on for you but I don't have any more ideas. I'm hoping someone else will have a clue or can point you in the right direction.

OooO one final thing as you had Vista on the D:\ I assume it has a newer version of NTFS structure. That may explain the errors. See if you can format/change the D:\ partition to Fat32 or Fat16 and then try and merge it with the C:\.

okay but im sure it said they both have to be NTFS! also, the C:\ has Vista on it too... in fact the exact same install that was on D:\ so i dont see why the versions are different!

ARGH!

cheers for your help so far though fella, much appreciated
