My missus want's a mk5 polo. I nosied about on parkers and see that there are 3 versions of the 1.4 petrol engines;
1.4 - 60bhp (Assume 8v, spi?mpi?)
1.4 - 75bhp (Assume 8v, spi?mpi?)
1.4 16v - 100bhp
I've been trawling PH, Autotrader and Ebay for the last couple of weeks. Nothing, as of yet, has turned up within a 100miles of me, so haven't had first hand of looking at the engines on these.
I'm just after a bit of clarification on what the engines look like, depending on the hp rating?
I was under the impression that the 75bhp ones had "1.4 16v" on the engine, whereas the 60bhp ones had "1.4 mpi". however, on the trader today there is a '75bhp' one, with the 'mpi' markings on the engine.
Is there a definative way of telling between the 3 variants? My missus has categorically stated that 60bhp isn't enough, LOL

theres no deffinate answer to what you asked iirc, so this is the easiest way
also, if your looking at one, the KW engine power is listed on the data sticker which is under the boot carpet, and in the inside cover of the service book

Reason is that there's a 1.4 16v on ebay (picture of engine shown) but the advert spec says 60bhp. I've checked insurance database and its not insured so i can't find out definately what it is.

Dave - There isnt a 60bhp 16v in the Mk5.
As Matt has put all the engine codes above - that will be on the boot sticker

How would that tell you the horsepower of each one?

Cool, when you get it check 2 things..
1) The gearbox selector shaft oil seal, they leak like mofo's and you can end up with gearbox trouble
2) When the cambelt was last done, the plastic casing on the tensioners tend to fall apart..
apart from that should be trouble free

the list of Mk5 is endless, ive had 2 now, lovely cars, i had a 1.0 then a GTi pedal box is also a common fault, id recomend you get a lupo GTi 6 Speed, no problems with the boxes on them

Because it's a VW. And with the diesels, it normally states what PS it is. Some Vauxhalls do it, even the Corsa. Doesn't take long in Churchill or Directline tbh.
