Has anyone driven an MX5? From what I know the driving position is pretty and ive only heard good things about the way they drive. What sort of potential do people think they have as a track or race car? For more than a year ive been toying with selling my car, but rather than kid myself, im not deciding on anything until my next track time is complete. For now though im considering options for the future, how do people rate them? Also does anyone have or know of pictures of good looking ones, I mean really mean! This is a guys apparently local to me, I think it looks awesome although id be looking more toward the earlier model unless persuaded otherwise? Oh yeah, hairdressers car - dont I know it! Could I live with such a rep!!? Cheers.

Meant ot be great cars

Driving position is like the z3 tbh, low down high transmission tunnel and a long bonnet. Its weird at first but then youll grow to love it! Get in any other car and it feels very weird like your sat on an armchair

Friend of mine has an 04 grey one with red and black leather, dash is a bit naff and dated but other than that they are corking little cars.

Id consider one as a cheaper replacement to the z if i had to.

*as for potential i dont know, shes a girl and not interested in going fast allthough she did have an audi tt previously but sold it as it was boring to drive

like this one with same wheels but in anthra:

Round corners or in a straight line? Do they have LSD as standard?

Potential?

http://www.max5racing.com/

If they're good enough for a one make race series.....

I'd love one, I'll probably have one next, fuck the hairdresser comments and people thinking you're gay, they're great little cars

As for mean ones, this one makes me want one more (probably not what you mean but hey )

The only problem is the engines are low compression, to get good power, you either need to go forced induction (turbo kits aren't a lot of cash though) or spend a bucketload on rods and pistons, TBs and headwork.

Loads of bits available for them too.

As for low comp, supercharging costs must be vastly reduced?

supercharger would be cheaper if you were starting from scratch, but there's off the shelf turbo kits available, Mazdaspeed did it, so did Brodie Brittain Racing in the UK, then there's shitloads of American kits.

You could bin the engine, YB has been done (JR has a pic). I want to do a 2.5 litre Duratec/MZR engined one, that'd be awesome

I never actually got round to driving one. Its unfair to compare the 2 really, 200bhp forced induction and 900kgs to whatever the MX5s are, country lane tests put the VX massivly faster as you would expect. However the MX5 driver is having just as much fun for about £10K less!

That shape MX5 is 130bhp and 990kg in 1.8 trim, probably for a boggo model, not some special edition thing with funky seats.

Am I right in saying the 1.6 is quicker? Or did I hear wrong? They do look strong with a hard top.

Don't do it James.

Too slow mate. Yeah 'fun' but you want something quick - ish on track.

990kg is quite heavy and 130 bhp is fairly weak.

Fair enough if you could strip the weight to 800kg and get the engine to push 170-180 bhp, but otherwise not really worth it imo.

You remember what I was telling you about future classics, they are ideal really, probably more reliable than some french tin.

If you're going to race a mx5, do the max5 championship that robin suggested.

If you're thinking just track days then

If you're thinking of running it in 'future classics' I just don't think it'll be quicker enough accel / straights to be competitive in a standard form.

I am building a 1.6 16v turbo in a few weeks, turbo is fitted and set up, needs an ecu, loom and mapping next. should see 180 bhp makes 157 on standard management!
