I've considered chaning to a more economical car, but as I don't want anything painfully slow the 1.7 CDTI seems like an obvious choice.
I had a spin in one the other day and though it's perhaps not the most exciting car in the world, it's actually a nice ride and also nippy enough for me.
What are peoples thoughts though? Am I going to hate my self for buying it?

Same engine as the Corsa C CDTI SRi IIRC?
If so, fanstaic engines, nippy, and brilliant MPG.
If you like driving one you can't be asking for much more really.

Seen some companies claim a 30 bhp power increase with a tuning box. Seems a bit farfetched to me, but then I know nothing about diesels...

No, the Corsa C is 100 bhp is it not? The Corsa D is 125 bhp.

.....but the car is also a whole lot heavier - expect similar performance.

I'd test drive a 1.3CDTi Corsa D. 90ps as opposed to 70odd in the Corsa C. Probably quite nippy and might return better fuel economy.

diesels are very tuneable and i doubt it would be far off a 30bhp increase with a remap. But it's all about the torque increase

Depends if it has the wank ECU though as to whether it can be remapped.

I did drive the 1.3 CDTI, but to be honest it's just a tad to slow. Overtaking on the motorway is a bitch in it and yet I seem to really miss that 6th gear.

Driven one in an Astra and its a pretty nippy engine... i imagine the corsa d is lighter? Quite a fan of the 1.3CDTi in a corsa as well, i've test drove the C and D versions of the 1.3CDTi, and the D is really stupid quick for a small diesel. You just nudge the throttle and it shoots off, lovely car to drive - actually preferred it to the VXR... maybe thats biased because I prefer driving diesels though?

I just realised there's two different Corsa D 1,3 CDTI's.
A 5 speed, 75 bhp doing 0-60 in 14,5 secs.
And a 6 speed, 90 bhp doing 0-60 in 12,7 secs.
Perhaps I should try to source down a 6 speed to have a go in that aswell....

Yeah. The one in the Corsa C 100bhp found in early Mk5 Astra's can't be remapped. . .yet. Tuning box doesn't give huge amounts of BHP, quite a bit more torque though. GSi_16v has one.
