On way to work this morning, me and my girlfriend took our own cars today as i've only done a half day, she was about 2minutes ahead of me on the dual carriage way.
Then I get a phone call from her saying shes pulled over as her tyre sounded weird and could smell burning.
I get there and I start taking the wheel off, the lockign nut key had been used before and had started to shear/disfigure so it wasn't undoing, had to get my dad to come over and bring his tools and we ended up hammering the key onto the nut and it held long enough for us to undo the wheel.
We get the wheel off, and this is what were confronted with, i was speechless....

The burning smell was insane, lucky she pulled over into a layby which was the only one for a while, any longer and it could of been dangerous i reckon....

Somthing been rubbing on the inside of the tyre?
Doesn't appear to be any other marks though?
Strange one
EDIT: Looking at the rest of the pics there are marks that something has been rubbing on the tyre for a while - standard wheels etc?
Lucky escape btw, blowouts at 70mph aren't good

I'm guessing by the title in the img links and the pics being of 5 stud wheels that it's not a wheel from a Corsa

Its a VW Beetle, 2000 i think, has the upgraded 18" VW alloys, i'm not sure if its factory upgrade or the owners before had them, they're VW multi spoke type ones (remind me of BBS)
She said to me she thought it was flat but was waiting to get her work bonus threough to pay for a new one (which was this fri) so we went to the tyre place and got a new one fitted in 15min, cost her £70 though for budgets!
Something must of been rubbing, i don't know what thought, do you think she should take it to garage and have the tracking looked at?

if the tyres not inflated properly, like she said it was flat she thought.
it actually wears the inside of the tyre out and it lookslike loads of black dust inside the tyre when you take it off.
Its probably just blown out,if it was rubbing something there would be rubbing marks.

I reckon its been flat for quite some time and its just finally given way like you say nova
I've told her she really needs to look at getting her suspension checked, its lowered about 90 odd mm i reckon, every hole or bump and it feels like the shocks going to come through the bodywork, i'm hoping the owner before didn't put stupidly low springs on the original shocks

I know that when my dad bought a Beetle, the only upgrades to the wheels were to 17" from 16" and they advised against fitting 18s.

get it down to a proper wheel/suspension place and get the tracking/camber sorted as thats most likely what caused it really, could have had such bad camber the tyre was rubbng on the springs

How much tread was actually on that tyre or does it just look bald from the side wall upwards in the pics. plus it does appear to be a rubbing mark consistent all the way round.

Why do you think it was a blow out or was about to blow out?
I'm confused.
All I see in the pictures is a tire that has been driven on flat for a long time causing it to get hot and melt!

The only thing that tire was rubbing on imo was the road!

flat running would cause the rim itself to carve through the tyre
