If I bought one for say a Vauxhall engine, do they work on other engines like Fords, or is there a way of updating them, been offered one and the lad reckons the map can be changed on them

There's more than a potentiometer in them...
If you can get a wiring loom for the particular box for a Vauxhall and a Ford then they will work. My one was off of a Vauxhall, bit it works on my Fiat - mainly because my engine was based on the Vauxhall engine that it came off of...
Essentially though, the box is the same, the wiring looms are the bits that differ. Either way though, the can fuck right off charging £300 for one of them, there is no way on earth you should pay that much for one. If you are considering spending that money then save up a little more and get a re-map!

Runs really well. It took a bit of setting up just to get it to the right setting. I find that the power all comes in one blast though in an 800rpm range at about 2500rpm. Not bad for for what I paid, it's a cheap bit of fun really. I'm sure a proper re-map would do a much better job of delivering the power smoothly through a wider power band, but then they cost a lot more than a second had tuning box...

The proper ones aren't just a couple of resistors, the cheap ones are.
The proper ones take the data thats being sent to the fuel rail and alter it digitally then send it back out, the net effect is giving it more fuel but it does it in a slightly more controlled manner.
