What settings did you use for them both?

VR isn't necessary if you're using a fast enough shutter speed

A good rule of thumb when you've not got VR (which is called IS on Canon lenses) is to try not to drop the shutter speed below the length of the lens.

So, if you're using 300mm, try not to go below 1/300th exposure.

Not always achieveable, but you could always increase the ISO to give you more room for faster shutter speeds

Tripod could work, but not particularly practical when you're doing certain shots.

My 300mm Canon has IS (image stabilisation) and for reference, if I'm careful I can drop down to 1/100th and still get pretty sharp shots. I'd never manage that without IS.

I dont have the IS 300mm lens, I do ok with it though. I can do alright down to about 1/125th, I mainly only use it at motorsport events where im panning most of the time anyway.

Yeh, panning is ok without IS. In fact my cheaper 55-250mm IS lens keeps jumping the image whilst panning as it gets all confused - easier to turn it off TBH. The 300mm has two IS settings so it much better
