Picture borrowed from Adam B, hope you don't mind!
I'm having problems removing the pulley, I know you only have to undo the 6 bolts around the edge but the rubber type mould around the bolts is actually touching all the edges of the bolts so I can't get a socket around it, It is just a removable rubber? I tried levering it out but didn't want to try too hard incase it's part of the pulley I need

What do you mean by the rubber type mould around the bolts?
Just that if it's the same as that one it looks like a socket would fit

here's what I mean, there just isn't enough space around the bolt to get a socket on, and a spanner just doesn't grip it enough in the tight space

how strange, they are usually hex key heads or bastard splines.

I'd love hex keys
Mine's a very early engine though, may be why?

Yup, usually allen head screws or torx.
What is the bit of rubber actually doing that's sitting against the bolts?

Its metal at the edge next to the bolts, then rubber, then the outer metal.
Tried to budge it all but to no avail!

Struggling to see how they were put on in the 1st place
I'd say SportyBoy's idea would get the best results. Then replace the bastards with allen screws

the plan is just to get the middle one out with a torque gun, then get the little ones out while its apart and change them for some hex items
