Laptop was broken, so fixed it, then it decided to break again

So ive decided, im not going to shell out on another laptop, im going to get myself a desktop instead for my final year at uni.

Im not up on computers, so im asking for a bit of help regarding the spec.
I will only be using it for interweb and word documents - maybe play the odd game like the sims

Im not looking expensive - max is around £430
Is this one any good?
Link to PC world

Any other options?
Thanks for any help, muchly appreciated

It will be fine.

Try looking through the dell site to build the best spec you can for the budget though. May get a better set up for cheaper

You won't go wrong with anything Dell tbh.

And as long as you don't completely overload it with shit, it'll last too.

Build one yourself you would get a far better spec computer doing it that way

Ive not a clue how to build one and wouldnt even know where to start.

Spec means nothing to me i wouldnt know what was good and what was pointless.
And no, no friends who are buildy people.

Marc, check with your uni before you buy anything, as I know my uni have a relationship with Apple allowing us approximately 20% off RRP prices.

Yours may do the same with Dell etc, give them a call to double check!

Because if someone has the inclination to do it to save themselves possibly 50%, there are plenty of easy to follow guides out there on the internet.

Hell Haimsey, im in Lincoln, you tell me what you want from your computer and I can build you one then you can come and pick it up

The people that say that don't realise that as the bottom level theres very little in it between the major manufacturers and building it yourself.

When something breaks they also go to who they bought it from and not you.

There's never 50% in it at the low end.

Exactly, Im fairly technical minded and up to date on things but i wouldnt dream of attempting to build one myself... much rather pay someone else and get the warranty etc

Same was as I woudlnt suggest to someone that they rpepare their own accounts just base don the fact they can use a claculator

Try to stretch to £400 and just get a laptop, that would be alot easier to use then a desktop at uni IMO.

Willay is correct-a-mundo if you arent going to be doing anything intensive, like batch graphics processing or playing games on it

Decided on a dell Inspiron 530

So been on the site and its askign what i want to add to it.

So i upgraded -

Memory FROM -
2048MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x1024]
TO -
3072MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x1024 + 2x512]

Hard Drive FROM -
320GB (7200rpm) SATA Hard Drive
TO -
500GB (7200rpm) SATA Hard Drive (my ext.hdd is nearly full)

I have this -
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E7200 processor (2.53GHz, 1066MHz, 3MB cache) [Included in Price]

And dont know whether to upgrade to - worth it? Pointless?
Intel® Core™ 2 Quad-Core Q6600 Processor (2.4GHz, 8MB cache, 1066MHz FSB) [add £40.00 or £1/month1]

Help?

Thanks

wont really see much difference i dont think, not much uses dual core still, let alone quad core. Also you probly wont need 3gb of ram, but always nice to have plenty to play with

So you think the upgrades on the memory and HD will be okay, and that teh processor isnt really worth it?

I got confused when it said dual/quad/etc

Dual core = 2 chips inside the processor
Quad core = 4 chips

As Willay said, however if you would rather have a massive night out on the money you will save (or a tank of petrol these days?!) then dont do the upgrades
