a mate of mine works at a body repair place and he said he can do it for me for £40 (the whole car)
looking at getting it done because it has a few minor scratches ( mostly down the bonnet where my misses cats slide down the bonnet )
is £40 for mopping the whole car cheap?

Mopping is:
Using a rotary and pads, along with compounds and polishes, to cut the paintwork. The cutting process removes scratches by removing layers of paint. Obviously this also removes the top layers of faded paint (hence why its good on flame red).
T-Cut is a good cheap alternative however wont remove scratches or swirls as well as using a mop.
For a corsa, just on the amount of time it would take, normally places will charge between £80 - £150.
This wouldnt make silver *shine* any more. Best way to make silver pop would be to use decent polish and wet look wax. This will give it a much better reflective sheen.

Autoglym SRP is great
Dodo Juice Wax's
Poorboys Polishes are good too. I would also invest in good applicators just after its been mopped so you dont add shit loads of scratches due to poor products.

I have patches on my paintwork where the paint has gone matt, also one of my arches is faded to a sort of orangey pink shade. Would mopping bring this paintwork back up to its original colour or will it really need a respray to get it back up to colour? Ive tried tcutting them to no avail...

why do detailing people usually take about 2 days to do this then surely it should be more than £50 odd for a decent job?

I had mine done for 50, wish I hadn't.. when I let it go pink again (lol) I could see nasty buffer marks where they must have burnt the paint, gutted.. needs doing again really.
