Ok, generally I'm quite good with this sort of thing, but I'd like to get some opinion on here.

I own a 1.6 16v Renault Megane with 280mm front discs etc, which 'look ok' - i.e not knackered.

Problem I have is when I'm braking 50+ The car pulls to the left.

The steering wheel goes to the left a bit and, also, the N/S strut seems to drop down a bit more than the O/S.

In addition to this, I also occassionally hear a single clunk when braking from the O/S.

Details:

2000 1.6 16v Megane - 152,000 miles - well maintained otherwise.

ide what a lovely engine there mint for 2 k then after that they are very costly

all you can really do jack up the car check there isnt any play in the wheels? it could just be a co axle gone... a common fault if you want to know with the 1.6 16v meganes is a rattle on cold start and the engine will cut out, its the dephaser pully which is run off the cam belt

Don't speak to me about cambelts!!

Had mine done before, then second time round I dont i myself. And the Inlet sprocket flange was all bent - and had been slicing away at the belt.

It's a miracle it never snapped. Was down to about half its intended width.

But, it's done well to cover those miles. Engine runs fine, with good compression on all cylinders. It's just EVERYTHING else thats went wrong!

Well what was it then? Loose sub frame bolts.

A while back a mechanic I use did my downpipe for me. He said afterwards how it was a "cunt of a job" and that "an attempt to lower the rear of the subframe was unsuccessfull as the bolts were just spinning"

Never thought to check this out, as I trusted the guy would actually tighten them back up.

Obviously not!
