For some reason my machine just wont recognise my ipod anymore when I plug the USB in

Has anyone had similar problems and managed to get it working again?

Does the iPod see the computer when you plug it in? What i mean is, does it start to charge the battery?

Edit, if not, i'd say the cable is fooked.

the battery is completely dead (And says so when I turn it on) - Im thinking the wire as well - although its sat on the desk as it has done for the last 2 years. very bizarre
