He has missed a good part of a few seasons now, so wouldnt mind betting its close to the end for him.

Nah, i think the idea is of announcing it now is to take the pressure off him so he doesn't feel any need to rush and he can get it sorted once and for all. The club should really have picked up on it before signing him though.

Tendonitis is one of them conditions where it either doesn't trouble you that much or it is really severe, it's horrible when it's severe and from a footballers view it's frustrating whilst on the pitch, you feel it creaking when you put pressure on the joint, and you can't get in places you'd normally be in to make tackles etc...
By operating on it will probably prolong his career rather than hinder it, because he'll have an advantage over the other 21 on the pitch, new lube in his knee.
