as above,

im about to turn 17 and cant decide, was going to get a 12 volt for low insurance but been told it wont be much less than a 8v 1.2..

Surely a 16v SXi wont be too much more?

And what sort of prices am i looking at on each, and how much am i looking at on insurance after a few small mods ( softstars, depos, 40 - 60 mm drop )

get the sxi the 1.2 8v and 1 litre are dangerously slow and insurance for me at 17 was £16 more on the sxi than the 1 litre.

i (like Deano) had a 12v, loved it to bits, yes its slow but on the RR it produced 60.3 bhp with a straight through, Irmy back box and K&N 57i - compared to Dean's standard car which reach 60.2.

the MPG is a great advantage even when you stay on the exciting side of 3.5k rev/mins. at 17 concentrate on getting on the roads and gaining experience before you worry about much else.

i drove 1.0 cars for 5 years, and done me no harm. i now drive a power comfortable car and enjoy the cheaper insurance!

4 cylinders every day.

I had a 1.2 16v and the difference was noticable.

I love my 1.0 12v Trust me they are far from quick but a great first car which returns great mpg!

Insurance wise I paid £2000 tpft with all mods declared at 17

i cannot fault my 1.2 litre 8v
i have owned it for three and a half years now- a very reliable, serviceable engine.

It's a joke everyone calls them 12 volt becuase it's so slow it feels like it's battery powered

To be fair, for a 1.2 litre engine, they were nippy enough.

Mine used to be able to hold 80 on the motorway no problems and returned 40-45MPG no matter how hard I drove it!

Nothing wrong with 1.0 12v for a new driver imho, just bought me brother one and much prefer driving it to mine, you just have to learn its downsides and that you can't just bomb off into the traffic. Not as slow as I was expecting tbh! Quicker than the 1.2 8v anyway You can always turn up the idle as well, which took me a few minutes.

My 1.4 8v LS was £1300TPFT at 17, it was shockingly slow though, but I ragged it to fuckery

As long as you dont drive like a dick doesnt really matter what engine you get, if you overtake safely, keep to the speed limits (which are there for a reason) you will be fine.

1.2 16v is £16 more to insure better equipment as well, faster what more can you ask for.

Depends what model tbh. SXi is nice, but has keep fit windows.

You have to drive a 12v like it has turbo lag, keep it above 3krpm and it's fine. Beat many a cars on a sliproad. Albeit downhill sliproad
