Test the alternator by the following:

Get a volt meter and measure the voltage of the battery.
Start the car, and remeasure the voltage.

When the engine is running, your battery should read between 13.5 and 14.5 volts. If it does, then its your battery at fault.

If the voltage doesn't change between starting the car and before, then the alternator is faulty.

Just tested the battery. When running it was at 14.5v and when not running it was down to 10.1v and dropping slowly.

I think its the battery then that has gone.

Would i be right in thinking i need a new battery ?

Yea, very much sounds like it mate. I had the same problem with mine about 2 months ago, bought a new battery and I've had no problems at all since.
