its a x16xe on about 65k
rings or valve stem seals?
i've done a compression test 240psi on all 4 cylinders, think thats a bit high??
it doesn't smoke all the time, only when it gets really hot sat in traffic then it clears, or just after booting it.
its fine when driving normally, smokes a bit on startup.
don't want to keep buying oil, need to sort it out.

Blue smoke usually means head gasket problems doesn't it? My old X14XE made blue smoke and that was a head gasket failier.

Burnign oil as said is a light bluey smoke.

Could be worn rings or valve stem seals, over time valve stem seals go hard and do allow oil to drip into the bore's overnight and when the engine is hot and during combustion it obviously get's burnt off.

test for rings is to get the car hot, take it to somewhere where a long hill is and drive down it, use the gears to slow the car down (engine breaking) then when at the bottom give it some beans and accelerate away, big puff of blue smoke means rings, normaly if the stem seals go it will be burning all the time iirc..

stem seals is normally on startup as the oil seeps down and build up. rings would smoke when giving it some.
