got a problem with a redtop starting

1st problem

The afm wires were broke and touching each other, it run but like a bag of shit, when you touched the connector the car would idle low and not rev. Think we cured the problem by re connecting them so they werent touching each other. Now it wont start.

Checked the continuity from the plug back into the loom and all seems to be ok

Now i'm thinking maybe the afm is broke as it was only running before (like a bag of shit) because it was shorting????

Now without having another afm thier to try i looked further into it .ie tps

2nd problem
The tps seems low on voltage when the throttle is closed or open. I measured the voltage to be no more than 0.02v which is supposed to be 5v ish so im told. But the battery did start going flat (10V) which wouldnt help. Could this be the problem or in addition to the afm?

Any info of how to do the papeclip test wouldnt go a miss either

Well if you read the codes off now it will give you the fault.

if you unplug the AFM on an XE you can normally get it to start, just. So having a knacked one on it, shouldn't really totally stop it from working.

try starting it with the afm unplugged bud...if the afm is unplugged it'll start but run shit,(hence proving its buggered)i had to replace my afm 2 times because it was faulty both times (mine wouldnt start like yours),also make sure you have good earths as that caused me probs when i put my dispac engine in,i ended up putting an earth strap off the gearbox to chassis leg to solve the problem

It wont start with the afm unplugged. All the earths look good. Checked them and they all work. Chased the earth wire from the tps (in the loom) back to the ecu and seems to be getting connection. Just going to check its going to the right pin in the ecu. After that its looking like the ecu maybe?

I'd say both your Afm and TPS are fucked. I wouldn't start messing with wires until you've replaced them, both.

BUT before you do, check the 2 earths on each side of the fuel rail, as these are for all the inlet sensors. I had loads of problems with these because the previous owner had painted the fuel rail with hammerite.

Like others have said it should really start with the AFM unplugged, ran my LET with it unplugged for about 3 months till I found another one.

Could it be something a little more simple stopping it from starting like its just flooded?

Not sure about it being an earth problem, ther arent many on the ECU side of things. Do you have a laptop with a serial port?

It wont start with the afm unplugged

The afm and tps both have earths, volts and signal.

AFM
signal is pin 7
volt is pin 37
ground is 26

tps
signal is 53
volt is 12
ground is 30

the afm is getting earth but the tps isn't

I'm going to test the tps later
