Shocking that people will do that yes, just as shocking that people are still stupid enough to accept a cheque.

I'm not so sure about open and shut case either, will a bit of A4 with a figure on it be enough to prove that was the agreed price for the car?

john, i know of one person that accepted 2 cheques for a car, one to be cashed the same week, the second to be cashed the week after. he delivered the car and took the 2 cheques despite me pleading with him not to. needless to say the cheques never cleared, he claims he went and collected cash from the chap, but i don't believe him for a second
people are still that stupid

I can kind of understand, people must really want to sell their car but with the internet and these scams(if you can call them that, it's just common sense) being on tv these days I don't know how people still fall for it.

As he is still legally owner on paper he should have just reported it stolen...that would have been funny, kid gets pulled over:
"excuse me son, this car is marked stolen, we will have to take the car from you, you have 10 days to show us all paperwork"

its one thing to be a retard, but if your mates point out that its clearly a scam and you still go through with it, then perhaps you deserve everything you get

He should have kept quiet about the sale and reported it stolen. That way he gets the car back and the buyer is £2k down.
This one is quite a lot of money but people being had off for the silliest of reasons is not a rare thing. Most disputes I get involved in could have been easily avoided with common sense.

The lad who came to buy my XE Corsa GSi offered me a cheque and said he would take me to a cash point to show me he had the £2000 in his account.
I just laughed and said no. He came back the next day with cash.
People who accept cheques for cars are just asking to be ripped off.
