It could just be a quick fix to get home without losing the exhaust completely.

I actually tied up my mates exhaust with wire as it was the only thing we had, and it got the car home okay.

I've seen much worse, one time a guy in the other village got someone to fit his backbox, turned out he fitted it with gaffer tape. He turned up at the shop I worked at at the time with smoke pouring from the back end from where it was melting the tape.
