CAUTION *jr style post but for Mazda stuff*
Been reading up on the future of rotaries. Mazda have developed a new engine, the 16X which will be appearing in the RX-9. The 9, unlike the 8, will be a focused sports performer along the lines of the RX-7.
Anyway, the engine:
Narrower rotors, with changes to the trochoid housing, give a longer "stroke" and equivalent 3.2l capacity as opposed to the 2.6l of the current 13B series. Reshaped ports and rotors give increased torque throughout revs, giving about 200lb/ft.
Smaller seals and spring assemblies to give more strength, means you're less likely to throw a tip.
Aluminium side housings make the engine much lighter also, for illustration here's a guy with a hat holding an all-alu 13B:
But, perhaps most interesting of all is the direct fuel injection which has been implemented on the new engine. Reduces in-engine temps, leads to better atomisation of the fuel mixture and can also be adapted to run on Hydrogen (admittedly with a power loss but it's still eco-friendly )
So there, maybe not everything in the future will be a fuel cell powered, silent boremobile. Unlucky if you don't like rotary noise though. Only bad point is they're not looking at forced induction on these either

A three rotor would be similar length to a current two rotor, theoretically a quad would be much easier to make with the 16X.
Only issue is the height, due to the larger stroke it's a taller engine, so to fit into say an FD, you'd probably have to look at dry sumping it.

Novelty IMO.
Don't like them a and never have! The RX8 is like a hairdrier that uses shit loads of fuel and oil and isn't even fast.the RX7 is better but still like driving a timebomb that uses shit loads of fuel and oil
And don't anyone say that's the same as driving a scooby!
They don't use much oil

have they solved the problem of heat expansion in the combustion area? I remember reading ages ago how they suffer from uneven heating due to the coldness of the block at the intake and extreme heat at the combustion area causing distortion of the alloy. There was talk of a bi-metallic block to combat this.
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

Don't know for sure, but I think the DFI will address that issue somewhat.

I've had 25mpg from mine, the first engine fault was a poor maintenance issue and the last thing was just an unfortunate issue with a casting that cracked.
You're just prejudiced IMO. Even when the engine failed in Germany it still did another 1000 miles and a couple of laps of the Ring.

There's several variations appearing, including:
and
I'm not sure myself, some say the RX-9 will be the new RX-7, some say it'll be the new RX-8 and a different 7 will be made.

Is that the size of the engine? Or is Doug only holding part of it, that's very compact if it is

They should just remake the RX7 with this new engine in!

Complete block with internals, no ancilliaries.
And yes, they should. They put a white Spirit R on the heritage section of the Mazda stand at the BMS and people were asking if they could order one.

As said though, that's a 13B like mine. The 16X will be shorter end to end but taller.
