Got a phonecall before from a company offering to build us a website for our business. From what I was told they sounded like a company my Mum and Dad used for previous businesses which basically find business people that know very little about websites and make them a crap website for a decent amount then charge fees for anything else you ask them. I asked for their domain and said I'd have a look at their site.

1and1 are pretty cheap. Although if you are using there Exchange facility i can do that a lot cheaper for you guys if you need this.

I had these guys ringing up the other day offering me their services.
I just let them blabber on as I was actually cleaning a car as they spoke to me.
I had to butt in though when they gave me the pitch of...
"So to sum it up, we will provide you with a domain name of www.refineddetail.co.uk and a 4 page full colour site for £xyz" - to which I asked wtf a full colour site was compared to a black and white one, and how they planned to purchase refineddetail.co.uk as I already own the domain name and have a perfectly acceptable site running on it. They just put the phone down on me then

well according the the control panel its all unlimited i would assume its got some fair usage policy to it somewhere, but cant really complain.

Unfortunately every man and his dog thinks they're 'professionals' at design nowadays which drags the rest of the industry down.
My normal reply to someone who tries to argue our prices with "Well XYZ is only charging X amount for a website" is normally "Well go with them then".
One local guy had some monkey design all of his corporate materials at the end of last year - business cards, letterheads, envelopes, compliment slips, stickers...
...and got everything printed with the word "Gulf" spelt "Gluf".

TBH thats his own stupidity as he should of proof read everything before he allowed the designer to get it all printed up.
The other problem with your 'well go with them' comment is that although a lot of cowboys out there, there are also a huge amount of people who are good at what they do and willing to negotiate in times where the market is so competitive.
