If you are having to top the coolant up all the time and your getting white smoke/steam out the exhaust I'd say the H/G is on it's way out. How's the car running?

My water pump is away at the minute, just worked it out yesterday. Im having to top my coolant up every 5 miles or so 
Drive the car over a surface where you will notice if something is leaking. Run the engine and see what comes out, the water pump is somewhere around the timing belt on my 1.4 16v
